Nearly 30 tonnes of compost was given away at SITA Cornwall’s Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) recently, as part of National Compost Awareness Week (May 3th to 9th). Residents who visited centres — including Bude — were offered free compost in exchange for their waste. The compost, produced from green waste previously collected on the HWRCs, was kindly donated by local composting companies including TT Compost Ltd . The giveaways were supported by waste minimisation advisors from the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and Cornwall Council who were on hand to answer any composting questions and give out expert tips on producing hassle free compost. SITA Cornwall’s Education Officer was also on site to provide information about diverting waste from landfill by reducing, reusing and recycling. SITA Cornwall’s Education Officer, Laura Bosworth said:

“We had an incredible response over the four days, and it was great to give something back to those using the recycling centres. We hope to repeat the giveaways next year, and in the meantime we would encourage householders across Cornwall to recycle and compost as much of their waste as possible.”

Over the past year nearly 20,000 tonnes of green waste was taken to SITA Cornwall’s HWRCs by members of the public for composting. The green waste is then shredded, screened and matured by Tinten Manor Farm, St Tudy.
